Ukraine calls for tighter sanctions as Russian attacks spark Kyiv gridlock
Is the war entering a new phase? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on allies to tighten sanctions against Russia after a wave of strikes triggered gridlock across Kyiv. Traffic chaos gripped the Ukrainian capital on Friday after Russian drone attacks overnight closed key bridges. Zelenskyy called for allies to act to prevent Moscow from sourcing components for its arsenal as Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine face attacks around the clock. The Metro Bridge was closed in the direction of Kyiv's right bank, the city administration said.
Russia tries to freeze Ukraine as it suffers record casualties and retreats
Is the war entering a new phase? Russia suffered its highest losses of 2026 in September, when 46,230 of its soldiers were killed or wounded, according to the Ukrainian military . The new record comes after Russian casualties of about 40,000 a month since June, and is close to the goal Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy set in January of 50,000 Russian casualties a month. Russia reportedly lost 2,090 troops on September 28 - its highest 24-hour casualty rate of the war. Al Jazeera cannot verify casualty claims from either side.
Trump launches midterms campaign blitz amid record low approval ratings
United States President Donald Trump has kicked off a 32-day campaign tour ahead of the November midterm elections that could see his Republican Party hurt by his handling of the war on Iran and the economy. "I give us an A+ on the government, on economics, on everything," Trump told a crowd of supporters at the Peterbilt Motors Company, a truck manufacturer. The president also blamed unfair media coverage for his growing unpopularity, arguing that his pre-election rally blitz was necessary to set the record straight. "We're doing an extremely poor job of promotion and an extremely great job of running the country," Trump said. But Trump's poll numbers have raised concerns about Republican prospects ahead of the November 3 midterm election.
Chinese hackers impersonated AI experts to target US policy minds
Chinese hackers have been impersonating artificial intelligence (AI) experts in the United States, including a former government official, according to a new report from cybersecurity firm Proofpoint. The report, released on Thursday, found that in July, a China-aligned hacking group called TA419 targeted a slate of US policy experts by impersonating prominent figures, including Lynne Edwards Parker, the former principal deputy director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The targets included policy experts at think tanks, defence contractors, universities and law firms in both the US and Japan. The report used a technique that creates a fake browser pop-up window inside a legitimate webpage that mimics an authentic-looking sign-in prompt to deceive victims and make it harder for them to realise they are handing over their information to hackers. Proofpoint did not specifically name the targets hacked, but the Reuters news agency was able to confirm at least one of them as Alex Engler, a former White House official who now heads the Penn Center on Media, Technology, and Democracy.
Western militaries are undermining Ukraine's defence, experts say
Western militaries are undermining Ukraine's defence, experts say Share Western militaries are undermining Ukraine's defence, experts say on social media Mundane regulatory problems in Kyiv and unimaginative institutional thinking in Europe's militaries are holding up joint weapons production. And that is undermining Ukraine's battlefield performance and leaving Europe's armed forces unprepared for modern warfare. Those are the conclusions of a new report from the Centre for Statecraft and National Security (CSNS) at King's College London, and experts who spoke to Al Jazeera. Kyiv receives weapons, Western partners receive know-how. That formula has led to at least 180 business-to-business partnerships between Ukrainian and foreign partners, but 22 percent of them are stalled, according to the report, Beyond Aid: Making Ukraine Defence Cooperation Work.
Blasts heard in Addis Ababa as Ethiopia conflict widens in the north
Explosions have rung out in Addis Ababa as fighting between Ethiopia's federal forces and a coalition of armed opposition groups widens in the country's north. Three diplomatic sources told the Reuters news agency on Thursday that the blasts were heard overnight in the Ethiopian capital. The blasts came hours after Addis Ababa instituted a ban on drone-flying in the capital and surrounding areas. The alliance unites seven armed groups, including the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and groups from the Amhara, Afar, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. It says it wants to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.
